We have our Final Four set for next weekend. In one semifinal the Syracuse Orange will meet the Michigan Wolverines. In the other one we have the Wichita State Shockers facing the Louisville Cardinals. There is the possibility we will get a rematch of the Big East Tournament championship game between the Orange and the Cardinals. If we do, look for Louisville to be crowned the next college basketball champions. Louisville had their way with em in the Big East Tournament.
But, the Cards will most likely be facing the Michigan Wolverines in the championship game. No disrespect to the Shockers or the Orange, but those two teams have clearly been the best teams in this tournament. Michigan trashed a very tough VCU Rams team, came back to beat the #1 seed Kansas Jayhawks when it looked to be over, and then absolutely hammered the SEC Champion Florida Gators. With Naismith finalist Trey Burke and freshman center Mitch McGary leading the way, this team is on fire. If Nik Stauskas keeps shooting the three ball like he did in the Elite Eight, the Wolverines will be tough to beat.
But Louisville has the teams that can do it. Russ Smith is absolutely unstoppable in the open floor. Peyton Siva runs the point as well as anyone in the country. They also have some every tall shot blockers in Georgi Deng and Chane Behannen. Louisville looks to be the best team in the country. They walloped a very good Duke Blue Devils team by 22 points after being tied 42-42 in the second half.
The Louisville-Michigan championship looks like it will be one of the best championship games in recent years. There hasn’t been a title game in recent years where the top two teams have stood out from the rest and have been so evenly matched. The last was probably Ohio State vs Florida in 2007.
Michigan has the chance to start a mini-dynasty with this run. They start three freshmen and a sophomore. If they all decide to come back next season, they will be the pre-season #1 team. McGary has been the difference in the Wolverines being a good team and a great team. He gives them an inside presence to go with the deadly outside shooting of Stauskas and Burke.
Louisville on the other hand has been building up to this. They made it to the Final Four a year ago. They have won two straight Big East Tournaments. Siva and his running mates will be in the NBA net year.
We think it will be a great battle, but we give a slight edge to Louisville.
