Maryland Pulls Off Upset of #2 Duke 83-81
The upsets continue in college basketball as today the #2 Duke Blue Devils lost to the Maryland Terrapins 83-81 in ACC action on Saturday. The win raised the Terps to 18-7 and 6-6 in the ACC and gives them a huge signature win for their NCAA resume. Duke never led in the second half and trailed by 10 with under four minutes to play, but mounted a rally to pull even at 81-81. But a Duke foul with 2.8 seconds left sent Seth Allen to the free throw line where he made both. Quinn Cook launched a 30 footer at the horn that hit the back of the rim and bounced off, sending the students on to rush the court.
Duke fell to 22-3 and 9-3 on the season. They were led by Seth Curry with 25 points while Cook chipped in 18 and Rasheed Sulaimon added 16. Duke seemed to be out of steam playing their third game in six days and could not get over the hump. The win was Maryland’s first in the series in the last six games and second in the last 14. Maryland claimed that the win was huge and the rivalry is a big one but Duke’s Coach Mike Krzyzewski wasn’t having it.
”I have a great deal of respect for Maryland,” Krzyzewski said. ”If it was such a rivalry they’d still be in the ACC. Obviously they don’t think it’s that important or else they wouldn’t be in the Big Ten.”
In other top 25 college hoops action on Saturday, the #7 Florida Gators put on a shooting clinic in their win over The Auburn Tigers 83-52. The Gators were led by Mike Rosario with 22 points, Michael Frazier II with 18 points, Kenny Boynton with 16 points and Erik Murphy with 11. They were 15-30 from three points as a team as Frazier was 6-7, Murphy was 3-4 and Boynton was 4-9. Rosario hit the other two as he was 2-6 but was 7-8 on two point shots.
Florida dominated from the start of the game as they doubled Auburn’s score all the way until it got to 72-36. Florida led 20-10 in the first ten minutes and 47-22 at halftime. They are now 21-3 and 11-1 in the SEC.
”We had 25 assists in the game but you don’t get 25 assists unless the ball goes in the basket, and the ball went in the basket for us,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said.
The #1 Indiana Hoosiers bet their rivals, the Purdue Boilermakers 83-55. The Hoosiers became the first #1 team in the last six weeks to go unbeaten for the week. They improved to 23-3 and 11-2 in the Big Ten and were led by Will Sheehey with 22 points and Cody Zeller with 19 points. The Hoosiers shot 56% from the field and outrebounded Purdue 37-25. On Tuesday the Hoosiers will visit the #8 Michigan State Spartans in a battle for first place in the Big Ten.
