SEC Update: Two Weeks Until the Tournament
The SEC Tournament: AKA the Wildcat Invitational is in two weeks. I love the SEC Tournament. You get to watch basketball games all day. On Thursday and Friday there are eight games and you get to see every team in the conference play at least once. It’s a fun weekend. This year the tournament will be held in New Orleans. Fun multiplied.
Kentucky will have the #1 seed for the tournament. They have a 12-0 record with four games left. One more win and they will clinch at least a tie. Florida is in second right now at 9-3. The Gators will play Auburn at home and Georgia on the road this week. Those would seem like games they should win. But look out for Georgia. You never know in those rivalry games.
Vanderbilt is right on Florida’s heels at 8-4. Vandy has South Carolina next. That should be an easy one. After that however they will play at Kentucky, host Florida and play at Tennessee. Kentucky is about a guaranteed loss, but Florida has to play them too so that’s a wash. They play the Gators in Nashville too. But Tennessee could be the difference maker. The Vols are tough at home and would love to take down their arch rival Commodores.
After that is where it gets really interesting. The fourth spot will also get a bye into Friday’s games. Right now there is a logjam for the four hole. Four teams are at 6-6 right now, Alabama, Mississippi State, Tennessee and LSU.
Mississippi State has Kentucky and Alabama on the road this week and a road game at South Carolina and a home game against Arkansas. UK and Bama this week will be tough but the last two games should be winnable. So the Dogs are looking at 8-8.
LSU has Georgia at home and Ole Miss on the road this week and Tennessee and Auburn on the road next week. They could very well win all four. Auburn will probably be the toughest game left. Conservatively, let’s say the Tigers will finish 9-7.
Alabama has a road game at Arkansas, which can be tough, and Mississippi State at home. Then they have a home game with Auburn and a road game at Ole Miss. The Tide should probably win three of those four. So they are looking at 9-7.
Tennessee will play Ole Miss, at South Carolina, at LSU and Vanderbilt. The Vols are Tarzan at home and Jane on the road. So they are probably looking at 8-8.
So if all that plays out it will be a tie between LSU and Alabama. The two teams split with each other so I don’t know how that would be settled. So these last two weeks will be interesting to say the least.
