Nets Win Home Opener

The Brooklyn Nets opened up the new Barclay’s Center in fine fashion with a win over the Washington Wizards 98-88. This was no ordinary preseason game. Wanting to win the first game so much, coach Avery Johnson put All-Star and Olympian Deron Williams back in the game for the final 3:15 to help close out the win. ”I just thought it was important,” Johnson said. ”I thought it was nice that our fans would go home with a good feeling about our team.”

Brook Lopez led the Nets with 18 points and 11 rebounds. This was the first home game for a Brooklyn sports team since the Dodgers left for Los Angeles in 1957.

The Philadelphia 76ers routed the Boston Celtics 107-75. Spencer Hawes led the Sixers with 17 points and Thaddeus Young added 15. Paul Pierce had 16 points for Boston while Brandon Bass added 11. The Celtics have lost both games since coming back from Europe where they went 1-1.

The Denver Nuggets beat the Golden State Warriors 104-98. Danilo Gallinari had 18 points while Corey Brewer had 15. Stephen Curry had 25 points for the Warriors while Klay Thompson added 21 points and David Lee had 15.

The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Orlando Magic in overtime 114-111. Omri Casspi scored 12 points, seven in overtime. Kyrie Iving scored 22 points in his best game of the preseason so far. The Magic are now 0-3 in the preseason.

The Dallas Mavericks beat the Houston Rockets 123-104. O. J. Mayo led the Mavericks with 20 points. The Mavs had a 20-0 run in the third quarter to turn a five point deficit into a 77-62 lead. Jae Crowder also had 20 points for Dallas, 18 in the fourth quarter. Vince Carter and Shawn Marion had 15 each. Kevin Martin led the Rockets with 23 points.

The Sacramento Kings beat the Portland Trail Blazers 117-100. Marcus Thornton led the Kings with 23 points, 11 in the fourth quarter.
