The Georgetown Hoyas were one of the best teams in the Big East Conference this past season. They were 14-4 in the regualr season which ties them for first place with the Louisville Cardinals and Marquette Golden Eagles.

Marquette went on to the Elite Eight before losing to another Big East team,, the Syracuse Orange and Louisville, well, Louisville won it all. As for Georgetown? The Hoyas were the first upset victim of the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the Round of 64.

It wasn’t just that the unknown school from the Atlantic Sun Conference beat the Hoyas, they embarrassed them. They completely dominated the game form about midway through the first half until mid way throught the second half. The Eagles stole the ball at will and ran out to lobs and dunks folowed by raucous celebarations form the fans who were pulling for the 15 vs 2 seed upset.

Georgetown, in retrospect, was ripe for the picking for an underdog. Otto Porter was the only offensice threat on the team. Georgetown won games this season by playing defense. Look at some of the scores of ther games:

Georgetown 37  Tennessee 36? Really? That’s not a halftime score?

Georgetown 46 Towson 40? You only scored 46 points on Towson?

Marquette 49 Georgetown 48

Georgetown 57 Syracuse 46

Georgetown 61 Syracuse 39

South Florida 61 Georgetown 58

You get the idea.

Playing defense is great. Louisville could be great on the defensive end. We all know how Syracuse plays that zone defense they play. But the reason these teams went deep into the tournament while the Hoyas didn’t is they had more than one scorer.

Now that the “Big Boys” have mostly left the Big East, now might be a good team for the Hoyas to re-invent themselves. Sure they will still have a conference of teams like the Butler Bulldogs, Villanova Wildcats, Xavier Musketeers, St. John’s Red Storm, and Creighton Blue Jays, but let’s face facts, other than Butler, ther are not Louisville or Syracuse type teams in there other than maybe Marquette.

Georgetown can afford to give up some defense to recruit some offense. Yes, they can win the new Big East Conference just by shutting down everyone else in the league. But, when the NCAA Tournament rolls around, you better have somne guys who can put the ball in the basket. Because at the “Big Dance” it is inevitable that you will run into some guys that can fill it up.

When that day comes, if you want to advance, you had better have an answer.

They will have to do this with guys already enrolled as they have only one signee in the 2013 class. That would be small forward Reggie Cameron, a four star player raned #88 in rivals.com top 150.

With Porter leaving for the NBA, young Reggie may have to carry the load on offense, unless some of the guys already there can learn to score more. This will require some more attention to the offense by the coaching staff. It will be interesting to see if they have it in them.
